Sally has 6 apples. From her 6 apples, she sold four crates of apples (y). After selling the four crates, she dropped half of all her apples that was left over. How many apples are in a crate?

  2. The story kind of fits with the equation. It is hard to understand because ‘Sally’ is selling 4 crates of apples from a total of 6 apples. Crates usually mean that there are lots of apples in one crate. I do not think I would be able to write the equation: (6-4y)/2 = y, from this equation. The way how she sold 4 crates of apples from 6 apples altogether does not make sense. It would be better if the subject was different. In the sentence, “...she dropped half of all her apples that was left over,” you could change it into she dropped half of her leftover apples. The story is good, but isn’t that creative. I could see that the authors put lots of effort into writing the word problems. Good job!

    1) Does the story fit with the equation? Is it functional? Would you actually write this equation from this word story problem?
A: Yes, the story fits with the equation and yes it is functional. I can write the actual equation while I'm reading the word problem.

    2) Does it make sense, or is it a little confusing? Discuss what is not clear, and suggest improvements.
A: Everything makes sense except the crates of apple. Since crate is more than one, maybe you can say a package of apple.

    3) Are there any grammatical mistakes? How should they be corrected?
A: You started as present tense but through out the problem, you start going into past tense. Keep it in one tense.

    4) Is the story creative? How could it be made better?
A: It is not very creative. Apple is just too common and not creative. Maybe do magical golden apple or flying apple. Something that catches attention.

    5) What are the positive points about the word problem?
A:I really like how simple it was. It wasn't too complicated that I couldn't solve it or too easy that I knew everything right away. Great Job Girls.
