A pack of baseball cards holds a certain amount of cards. James had 8 baseball cards but then his dog ate 2 packs worth of cards. Austin had 20 baseball cards but his brother took away 4 packs worth of cards. Then his Mom said he has too many and has to pick his favorite cards which should only add up to 1/4 of his total cards right now. James and Austin met at school the next day and realized that they have the same amount of cards. How many cards are in each pack?

  2. 1) Does the story fit with the equation? Is it functional? Would you actually write this equation from this word story problem?
A: The story fits the equation. It is functional. I would actually write this equation from this word problem, because it is very realistic.

    2) Does it make sense, or is it a little confusing? Discuss what is not clear, and suggest improvements.
A: It makes sense and it is not confusing. I think this word problem is perfect.

    3) Are there any grammatical mistakes? How should they be corrected?
A: There are no grammatical mistakes.

    4) Is the story creative? How could it be made better?
A: The story is not really creative. It’s really broad. I think changing the variable, which is the number of cards in each pack to number of fruits, computers, mp3s, etc. A pack with one card doesn’t make the reader or solver to excited.

    5) What are the positive points about the word problem?
A: I liked the basic plot. It made sense and it didn’t take no longer than 2 minutes to write an equation for this. GREAT WORK KIDS!

The word problem makes perfect sense and it is not confusing. There were too many taking away which made it confusing to read. Maybe it will sound better when they make the story flow.
